Background & Composition

During the coronavirus pandemic, she took a break from YouTube and wrote her own original songs.[2] She wrote 21 songs and selected 10 of them that really reflect her personal, real experience in my life, to make the album.[3][4] This album contains various styles and stories like a fairytale story she experienced when she were not known, an ironic story about selling her guitar to pursue music, the story of her debut on YouTube or the feelings she wants to convey to her fans.[5]

J.Fla were personally implied in the entire music creation process. She wrote and composed the songs, and she oversaw track composition, arrangement, production.[6] So she could be put all her personal feelings in the album.[7]

Name of the album

The name of the artist "J.Fla" contains "Fla" word which stands for "flower". And her real first name (정화) also contains the meaning of "flower" (화 is the pronunciation of 花, the hanja for "flower"[8]). With this album named "Burn The Flower", she wanted to embody the idea of burning herself, in a metaphorical sense, while making this album.[9]

The title of the album also refers to the Korean word 불꽃 which means 'fireworks' or 'spark'. This word is composed of '불' (fire) and '꽃' (flower)[10], hence the title of the album.[9]

My Childhood Dream

Thumbnail of 'My Childhood Dream' MV

My Childhood Dream is the first track of the album, which is dedicated to J.Fla's childhood. With a vintage style, the sweet melody takes us on a journey into the innocent world of childhood.[3] Through this song, she remembers her childhood wish to become an adult.[6]

When she was young, she wanted to become to grow up and become an adult. She sings about her wonderful dream that she can never forget, with a playful melody and a fun arrangement, with a childlike heart.[11]

Invisible me

Thumbnail of 'Invisible Me' MV

Invisible Me is a song which tells about a difficult period of J.Fla when she wondered if I should give up music. At this moment, she removed all the mirrors at home, because the feeling of giving up on music seemed to be reflected on her face.[6] It was a time when this fear made her feel invisible.[12]

Thus, this song also expresses the difficult feeling of feeling like an invisible person through deep loneliness. She wants to convoy the wish that people look at her at least once when feeling lonely. Through this song, she wants to share a comforting message and heal the hearts of those who are going through difficult experiences, like her before.[13]

Composing & recording

This complex song required a particular effort from J.Fla. She even made 2 versions of the song. After completing the composition, recording, and mixing, she wasn't finally satisfied and decided to she started the whole process from scratch.[14]

The video was recording on a beach. During the recording, the wind and waves were so strong, the clothes and hair got drenched. These conditions give a particularly dramatic result to the scene well adapted to the song.[15]

Telecaster

Thumbnail of 'Telecaster' MV

Telecaster is a song dedicated to a guitar J.Fla owned. The song was composed on the metaphor of the guitar described as a beloved.[3]

When she was young, because she liked the guitar brand "Telecaster", she bought this expensive guitar after having saved up money. This guitar, named "FenFen", was like a friend for her. But making music was difficult and she needed money to hoping to start music career. So she decided to sell this guitar to pursue her dream of music. It was an ironic story she tells through this song Telecaster.[6]

The EDM approach of the song gives a fun music style despite the dramatic theme of the story of parting ways with someone I love. It reflects all the ironic feeling of the story.[3]

A Four Leaf Clover

Thumbnail of 'A Four Leaf Clover' MV

A Four Leaf Clover is a song related to the story that happened around 2015. The singer was singing at a small motorway service station, but there was no reaction. So she felt depressed and just wanted to quickly leave the scene and run away.[6] After finishing the performance, she came down from the stage to leave. But an older lady stopped her to hand a four-leaf clover and say I enjoyed the song. Your voice is so good.[16] This woman was like a ray of sunshine in the middle of cloudy weather. She was very comforted to see that someone was listening to and liking her music. J.Fla has never forgotten this moment which gave her the courage that she shouldn't give up. After this experience, she felt like she had many lucky moments.[9]

A Four Leaf Clover is a song she worked on reminiscing about that evening and appreciating the genuine warmness she felt. This song presents the atmosphere and how she felt in that special moment, in a narrative tone, just like she am telling you a story.[16]

To Me

Thumbnail of 'To Me' MV

To Me is a song with a groovy melody and a hip rhythm which expresses the rough mindset having gone experienced by J.Fla. At some point in her life, she realized that I was very self-critical. Each mistake she made meant the entire world might collapse on her. She was able to overcome this moment with a new mindset through which she reaches out to herself, by saying: Let me get excited to find out what the future holds for me. But for now, let me make today and everyday as the happiest day of my life. This song is the signature of this determination.[17]

Bedroom Singer

Thumbnail of 'Bedroom Singer' MV

Bedroom Singer is the 6th song of the album Burn The Flower, but the first song J.Fla wrote for this album.[18]

After several months of absence to prepare the album, J.Fla came back in October 2022 with this spectacular song. The explosive energy of this music suited the singer's triumphant return.[19]

This song is a part of her autobiographical story, during which she debuted as a singer. When she started her YouTube channel, she sang in her bedroom by imagining she was standing an on a stage bigger then any other stage.[6][2] So she sang from her bedroom without stage or physical audience. She was able to become known little by little through her channel and she was able to gain courage thanks to the comments of fans who began to gather one by one.[18]

J.Fla wrote this song with her emotions she felt during difficult days when singing songs that weren't hers.[20] It was powerfully expressed in this song with strength and passion.[18]

Reaction

Bedroom Singer received a warm response in the United States immediately after its release. It ranked 145th on the Billboard Digital Song Sales Chart, and reached #1 on the iTunes Alternative Chart and Amazon Best Seller in Songs Chart. Additionally, Shazam ranked 8th on the USA Top 200 chart, becoming the first K-pop artist to do so. [20]

The reaction from fans was also enthusiastic. Fans cheered J.Fla's honest story, and her sister said she was moved by the song. [18]

The Hare

Thumbnail of 'The Hare' MV

The Hare is one of the masterpieces of J.Fla's album Burn The Flower. Inspired by the story 'The Hare and the Tortoise', the song borrows part of the William Tell Overture with a fast tempo and an alternative pop melody reminiscent of Disney.[19][21]

This song is an autobiographical story of J.Fla, who chose to walk slowly by enjoying the happiness of the present moment, rather than running fast.[19]

“예전에 제가 힘들었을 때, 주위에서 '너무 이상만 추구하는 게 아니냐, 철 좀 들어라'라고 한 적이 있어요. 그때 '나는 느리게 영글어 갈 뿐인데'라고 생각했다.” (J.Fla) “In the past, when I was having a hard time, people around me told me, "Aren't you pursuing too many ideals? You need to be more disciplined." At that time, I thought "I'm just learning at my own pace".” (J.Fla)

History

One day when J.Fla was the waiting area in a dental clinic, there were storybooks for children to pass the time and she decided to pick up and read the book "The Hare and the Tortoise".[21] The impression she had when she read it was completely different from the impression she had when she was younger. This time, she felt sorry for the hare and she felt closer to him. She thought the hare probably didn't want to fight against the turtle, and he only wanted to have a rest. Because the hare can run fast, everyone may put pressure on him to win, despite the fact that he simply wants to have a break. J.Fla felt the same way with music. At this time, she was writing songs for about 14 hours a day and she felt like the hare caught up in the match. So, through this song, J.Fla want to explain the 'goal' have different meanings depending on people. If a goal can mean success for some persons, J.Fla's goal is now to do everything she love and want to express, at her own pace, just like the hare in the story.[2][22]

So, the song shares an important message: one must slow down and savor the beautiful moments of life instead of running in a race. [21]

The First Take

J.Fla sang this song The Hare for The First Take channel, the video of which was released on March 29, 2023.[23] The First Take is a famous YouTube channel in Japan that invites singers to perform a song recorded in one take in a white studio.[24]

This version is slightly different from the original song, because it was recorded with with eight live strings. Adding orchestral strings combined with the fact that the singer was recorded under the same conditions as a live makes this version of the song emotionally wonderful.[22]

Before I Met You

Thumbnail of 'Before I Met You' MV

Before I Met You was released on February 3rd, 2023 and is the 9th song of the album Burn The Flower. Unlike the other songs on the album, this song does not refer to a particular experience in the singer's life, but to her feeling for her fans.[2] Until now, she mainly wrote lonely songs or unrequited love songs. Someday a fan asked why she didn't write happy love songs. After that, J.Fla immediately started playing the guitar and writing a positive song. She finally created the melody, lyrics and the arrangement in one day.[25][2]

Nineteen

Nineteen is a song written during the coronavirus pandemics (the title of the song referring to "Covid-19"). At this time, people couldn't meet in person. Through this music, J.Fla wanted to express her love for people she cherish and her acceptance of the situation, despite the difficult situation.[3]

Sorry I Made You Wait

Sorry I Made You Wait is a song dedicated to J.Fla's fans. During the year 2022, the singer made her fans wait for a long time to prepare the album Burn The Flower. So now, she wants to say to them "thank you" and "sorry" with this song.[4] Because it is not always easy to express the feelings, J.Fla conveys her feeling through music. It is true with this song in which she tried to capture her feeling, but it is also true in all songs of the album.[3]
