The Hare is a song composed and sung by J.Fla. The single and the music video was released on November 11, 2022, and the song was included in the album "Burn The Flower" released on June 8, 2023.

Background & Composition

This music is one of the masterpieces of J.Fla's album Burn The Flower. Inspired by the story 'The Hare and the Tortoise', the song borrows part of the William Tell Overture with a fast tempo and an alternative pop melody reminiscent of Disney.[1][2]

This song is an autobiographical story of J.Fla, who chose to walk slowly by enjoying the happiness of the present moment, rather than running fast.[1]

“예전에 제가 힘들었을 때, 주위에서 '너무 이상만 추구하는 게 아니냐, 철 좀 들어라'라고 한 적이 있어요. 그때 '나는 느리게 영글어 갈 뿐인데'라고 생각했다.” (J.Fla) “In the past, when I was having a hard time, people around me told me, "Aren't you pursuing too many ideals? You need to be more disciplined." At that time, I thought "I'm just learning at my own pace".” (J.Fla)

History

One day when J.Fla was the waiting area in a dental clinic, there were storybooks for children to pass the time and she decided to pick up and read the book "The Hare and the Tortoise".[2] The impression she had when she read it was completely different from the impression she had when she was younger. This time, she felt sorry for the hare and she felt closer to him. She thought the hare probably didn't want to fight against the turtle, and he only wanted to have a rest. Because the hare can run fast, everyone may put pressure on him to win, despite the fact that he simply wants to have a break. J.Fla felt the same way with music. At this time, she was writing songs for about 14 hours a day and she felt like the hare caught up in the match. So, through this song, J.Fla want to explain the 'goal' have different meanings depending on people. If a goal can mean success for some persons, J.Fla's goal is now to do everything she love and want to express, at her own pace, just like the hare in the story.[3][4]

So, the song shares an important message: one must slow down and savor the beautiful moments of life instead of running in a race. [2]

The First Take

J.Fla sang this song The Hare for The First Take channel, the video of which was released on March 29, 2023.[5] The First Take is a famous YouTube channel in Japan that invites singers to perform a song recorded in one take in a white studio.[6]

This version is slightly different from the original song, because it was recorded with with eight live strings. Adding orchestral strings combined with the fact that the singer was recorded under the same conditions as a live makes this version of the song emotionally wonderful.[4]

Lyrics

Original lyrics (English)[7]

Spreading out on a fresh green carpet Snow-white fishes are swimming in the skies It makes me doze off in sweetness I close my ruby cast eyes for now

I hear you Run run As fast as you can You have no time to lose You won’t get to anywhere

You have no idea I'm not losing I'm just trying not to get there super fast There are too many moments of happiness to just rush Dwelling on the happy moments, I'm going to stroll One step two step Taking every step nice and gentle

Resting on the burgundy ground Floral fishes are swimming in the lake It makes my mind go blank and I forget where I was heading to for now

I hear you Run run You will fall behind You have nothing but a dream You will end up losing You will be forgotten

You have no idea I'm not losing I'm just trying not to get there super fast There are too many moments of happiness to just rush Dwelling on the happy moments, I'm going to stroll One step two step Taking every step nice and gentle
